For most of us, mornings can be hectic with getting ready, packing lunches, and getting everyone out of the door to make it to work or school on time.  You may not even have time to eat breakfast, but did you know that you could be missing out on vital nutrients you need for the day without it?

Breakfast is essential because it helps start your metabolism and fuel your body after its rest period to prepare you for your day.  You may feel that by skipping breakfast you are saving calories to lose weight, but it may actually be causing you to overeat. This meal will help to hold you over until lunch and may even help you make better food choices throughout the day.  Eating breakfast may help you to feel more alert and awake in the morning and give you the energy you need to keep going.  Studies have shown that school and work performance have seen major improvements with those who choose to eat breakfast.  For many people, they say they do not feel hungry first thing in the morning, but it is important to have something in your stomach, even if it is something small.

Breakfast can more often be about what you eat, then if you choose to eat this meal at all.  The quality of your breakfast can affect your mood.  Small breakfast items such as hard-boiled eggs, Greek yogurt, or a slice of toast with peanut or almond butter can go a long way to add protein into your diet that will keep you feeling fuller longer.  High fiber foods are also a good way to make you feel full and hold you over until lunch.  You want to make sure that you avoid sugary cereals and refined carbs because eating these foods can cause a crash effect later in the day and may leave you feeling worse.
