About the Summer Food Service Program
Summer Food Service Program
Information
Food that’s in when school is out.

Feeding hungry kids all summer is a big job-ask any parent! This is especially tough on a tight budget.  The Food Finders Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) was created to meet the needs of hungry children during a time when other resources, like the National School Lunch Service, are not available. This program is open to any child under 18 years of age.

The Food Finders Summer Food Service Program began the summer of 2010 with 4 sites in Lafayette and Benton County. The kids enjoyed recreational activities, fun food education, arts and crafts and the time spent with the Lunch Crew.

In 2011, Food Finders received a grant from ConAgra and Feeding America, which helped them greatly expand their efforts. The program increased to 17 sites around four counties (Tippecanoe, Benton, White, and Clinton). Most sites were organized by volunteers at area churches, libraries, apartment communities and schools. By summer’s end over 10,000 meals. In addition to lunches- take home items such as fresh fruit, vegetables and pantry staples were provided weekly. Most sites added fun recreational activities for the children.

- Less than 20% of children eligible for free and reduced lunches receive meals during the summer months. Food Finders works to reach as many children in need as possible.

- Fewer resources are available in rural areas and children in rural counties often have a difficult time reaching resources.

- Each meal served meets USDA meal pattern guidelines
