Food Finders sends out an urgent plea

BY BOB SCOTT • BSCOTT@JCONLINE.COM • MARCH 4, 2010

Food Finders Food Bank is reporting an "all-time low" for its supply of food.
For the first time, the Lafayette-based food bank is appealing to the public for emergency help.
"Times are tough right now. Agencies and families are struggling," said Katy Bunder, executive director of Food Finders.
"We are working hard to get everything we can to share with our agencies to help people through these hard times. Unfortunately, our supply of food is at an all-time low, and we know families can't wait to eat."
Through March 19, people are urged to drop off nonperishable food items at any Regions Bank location in Greater Lafayette and at the Food Finders warehouse in Olympia Industrial Park.
The shopping floor in the warehouse, which was built in 2000, normally has 20 or so bins full of donated food and other free items.
A visit Thursday found only a handful of bins on the shopping floor and none in the warehouse aisles. The bins had only a few items.
Pantries and agencies can buy food for 19 cents a pound.
The warehouse shelves have canned goods purchased by Food Finders, but food pantries and nonprofit agencies rely on the free food to stretch their budgets.
Especially needed are canned and boxed meals, meats and baking mixes. There is a critical shortage of canned vegetables, fruits, soups and stews. Household items, such as toilet paper, diapers and tissues, are needed.
Food Finders serves 10,000 people weekly in 16 counties.
